Free Font Manager Software
Font managers vary in their functionality. Most let you browse through your font collection, whether they are already installed on your system or whether they are fonts kept in a separate folder/directory. They also let you organise ("organize" in other variants of English) those fonts into categories or groups or easy management or use, view the characters/glyphs available in the font (ie, see samples of the font characters so that you can decide whether you want to use that particular font), install and uninstall fonts, load a font temporarily into the system (so that you can use the font in another program, without having to install it permanently), search for a particular font, and so on. Some programs may even let you repair defective fonts, after checking its integrity.
As usual, note that commercial font managers, like Font Manager from
Serif,
are not listed here.
In addition, if you're looking for font editors, so that you can create or modify an existing font, please see the Free Font Editors, Font Creation Software and Sites page instead. Those looking for free fonts can find them listed on the Free Fonts for Programmers, Webmasters and Designers page.

Free Font Manager Software
- CFont Pro (Windows)
CFont Pro lets you preview fonts from any folder, search your computer for fonts (not just in the Windows system font folder), see the properties of a particular font, see a character map for the particular font, magnify a character in a font for close scrutiny, check out the font details and information, create proof sheets (which you can export to HTML or RTF files) of all the fonts on your system with sample text, package fonts for installation on another system, copy and move fonts, etc. The program supports TrueType fonts, OpenType fonts, Bitmap fonts and Postscript Type 1 fonts. This program works on Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista and Windows 7.
- Font Frenzy (Windows)
Besides the standard features found in font managers like viewing samples of fonts (installed or in a specified folder), installing/uninstalling and loading/unloading fonts, Font Frenzy lets you take a snapshot of all the fonts currently installed on your system. You can then, at your option, restore your system back to that particular state (where installed fonts are concerned) at a later time. It also knows what fonts are preinstalled in a pristine Windows XP and Vista system and is able to remove all fonts except those shipped with Windows (useful if you're worried that your thousands of fonts are clogging up your system and slowing it down).
- AMP Font Viewer (Windows)
The AMP Font Viewer allows you to install/uninstall fonts, temporarily install one or more fonts temporarily (for use with a particular program until you exit from it), organise fonts in a category, view sample text (which you can type yourself) of a font, print a list of installed fonts along with sample text of each, etc.
- The Font Thing (Windows)
The Font Thing lets you view (customizable) sample text of installed fonts as well as fonts located in a folder elsewhere on your system (ie, not currently installed), see the font information of those fonts (things like copyright, licensing details, etc), print font samples, install/uninstall fonts, temporarily load/unload fonts (without installing/uninstalling), rename font files, group fonts into collections, etc. Note that this is a very old program, written for Windows 9x and NT 4.0 and last updated in 1999, so I'm not sure if it works on newer Windows systems.
- Font Xplorer: Font Viewing and Management Software (Windows)
Font Xplorer lets you browse both the set of fonts that are installed on your computer as well as those not installed, load/unload or install/uninstall fonts, check out the font information embedded within the font (such as its copyright, licence allowing you to embed the font in documents, etc), view the font metrics, filter fonts by character sets, repair damaged fonts, see the character map for the font, copy a character/symbol to the clipboard, rename font files, compare fonts, check for duplicate fonts, etc. At the time this mini-review was written, the program only works on Windows 9x, NT4, 2000 and XP, but not on Vista or Windows 7. It can only handle TrueType fonts (*.ttf files) and OpenType fonts that have TrueType outlines (*.ttf); that is, OpenType fonts with PostScript outlines (*.otf files) and Adobe Type 1 fonts (*.pfm, *.pfb, *.pfa, *.afm, *.ofm files) are not supported.
- Fonty Python (Linux)
Fonty Python lets you view your fonts, find them, install or uninstall for your current user account, and group fonts into collections. At the time I write this, it only works with TrueType fonts (*.ttf) but not OpenType and PostScript (Type 1) fonts.
- Font Matrix (Linux, Windows)
Font Matrix lets you view installed fonts, read its licence ("license" in some English variants) and other font information, check out all the glyphs (characters) available in that font, see sample text displayed using that font, activate or deactivate a font, etc. Although this is a Linux program, there seems to be an experimental (?) Windows version available for download for those interested to try it out.
