Free EPUB Readers (Ebook Viewing Software)

The free software listed here let you read ebooks in the EPUB format on your computer. Very often, they also let you read books in other formats as well, such as PDF, CBR and CBZ (often used in comic books), XPS, etc.

If you want something that can display PDF files, you may also want to take a look at the Free PDF Readers / Viewers page, although there is a lot of overlap with this page (since, as mentioned above, many of the software listed can handle both EPUB and PDF formats).

Sumatra PDF (Windows)

In spite of its name, Sumatra PDF can also be used to view EPUB ebooks, among others, such as Mobi, XPS, CHM, DjVu, CBZ and CBR. It is designed to be portable, start fast, with no external dependencies, so that it can be easily placed on a USB drive and run from there. It uses the MuPDF software library internally. The program is released under the GNU General Public License (an open source licence).

Thorium Reader (Windows, macOS, Linux)

Thorium Reader is an open source EPUB viewer for Windows, macOS and Linux. It features the ability to customize the layout, navigate via the table of contents, set bookmarks, and attempts to ensure that it is accessible to visually impaired people using screen readers like NVDA, Jaws and Narrator. For the curious, this is a JavaScript program, using the Electron framework. Note: on the download page (linked to above), scroll down to the part tagged "Latest release" to get the program. (The ones tagged "Pre-release" are meant for developers and people testing/debugging the program.)

Foliate (Linux)

This program, written in JavaScript, supports EPUB, Mobipocket (.mobi), Kindle (.azw, .azw3), FictionBook (.fb2, .fb2.zip) and comic books (.cbr, .cbz, .cbt, .cb7). It supports bookmarks and annotations; the ability to adjust fonts, line spacing and margins; single-column, double-column or continuous scrolling; text-to-speech support; search; etc. This is a Linux program. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

MuPDF (Windows, Linux)

MuPDF lets you view EPUB, PDF XPS, OpenXPS and CBZ files. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License.

Okular (Linux)

Okular is a universal document viewer for KDE that supports the viewing of EPUB, PDF, DjVu, MD, CBR, CBZ files as well as images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIF, WebP). It supports text selection, annotations, extraction of embedded files, etc. This is a Linux program. It is released under the GNU General Public License.
