Free software that allow you to edit, record, add sound effects to digital sound / audio files

Free Digital Audio Editors, Free Digital Sound Editors

This page lists free software that allow you to edit digital audio files like WAV files, MP3 files, and so on. Some of them also allow you to record sound either from a microphone, from streaming media (such as RealAudio), from your DVD or VCD, from vinyl records, cassette tapes, minidiscs, or from other source. You can usually add sound effects, split, resize, fade, crossfade, pitch shaft, mix, copy and paste sound segments, etc.

Commercial music production software, like the MAGIX Music Maker are not listed below. The paid software tend to have many more features than their free cousins, such as coming with a large number of predefined sounds and effects, having instruments with realistic sound (guitar, drums, e-piano, power chords, e-bass), a MIDI editor, atmospheric and background noises (if you need such a thing), etc, besides the usual ability to record, create, remix, add effects, and edit digital sound. (Another commercial software commonly mentioned is Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio.)

mp3DirectCut (Windows)

The problem with editing MP3 files with some sound editors is that they usually decompress the file before allowing you to change it, and then recompress it again when you are through. While this is necessary if you are performing complex changes, sometimes you just want to split a file into small pieces, or cut/snip some small portion away from it, and this decompression/recompression business results in a lower quality file. MP3DirectCut lets you perform simple operations on MP3 file without the loss that accompanies decompressing/recompressing an MP3 file. The program lets you nondestructively cut, paste, copy, trim, crop, split your audio or music files, change the volume, normalise it, fade, and even record direct to MP3. Note that this Windows program can also work under Linux if you use Wine.
