Cheap, affordable, commercial web hosts
Budget Web Hosting
Listed on this page are cheap web hosts (commercial web hosts, of course) and brief reviews of the hosts. Note: only where I have information pertaining to the host will there be a review. What constitutes a "budget web host" for the purpose of this page? Essentially I just use common sense (my definition of it!), looking at the price of the package and its features. A package which costs $20 or under per month might make it here. On the other hand, a package that costs more (eg $30) but providing additional features (eg an exceptional amount of data transfer or free web design) might also make it here. Most of these web hosts have more than one package available. To keep each description from being overly-long, I often only list their cheapest package on this page. You can click the link to find out more about the other packages if that host interests you.

If your site is resource intensive, that is requiring a lot of memory or CPU time, you may be interested in the Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Web Hosting and the Web Hosting: Dedicated Servers pages instead. Those plans allocate more resources to your website, allowing you to do things you would not normally be permitted in a shared web hosting environment. Warning: take all claims of "unlimited" disk space and bandwidth in the web host's packages with a pinch of salt. If you're not sure why, read the article The Myth of "Unlimited" in Web Hosting and investigate the host's Terms of Service carefully. In addition, the prices and features listed here were correct at the time I checked it. However, the web hosting industry is very competitive, and thus the hosts tend to change their prices and package features very frequently (with emphasis on the "very"), so much so that the current prices and package details will probably be different by the time you read this. Your best bet is to check the host's site for the authoritative information.

This well-known domain registrar also provides web hosting plans, with its cheapest plan starting at $3.99 per month (paid 2-monthly). The Linux package provides 5 GB of disk space, 250 GB of data transfer, 11 FTP accounts, 200 email addresses with 10 MB of space for the email, webmail, email forwarding and auto-responders, 10 MySQL databases, ability to manage your domain name DNS, unlimited domain hosting, 25 subdomains, site statistics, server side includes (SSI), PHP, FrontPage server extensions, etc. Both credit card and PayPal payments are accepted here.
- Register.com: Custom Website Design
This company, a well known domain registrar from the earliest days of the Internet, also offers web hosting. Besides the usual standard web hosting packages, they also offer a Build-It-For-Me Custom Website Design package, where you work one-on-one with a dedicated web consultant who will take care of everything for you, including designing your site according to your specifications, maintaining your site, technical support and even updating your content. If you choose that route, use the coupon code "
REGCUSTOM002" (without the quotes) in order to get a $100 discount. For those looking to design their website themselves, their standard website packages start at $12.95 per month and includes a free domain name, 1 free email account (10 GB email storage), 5 GB of space, 20 GB of data transfer, hundreds of customizable web design templates, etc.- StartLogic Web Hosting
This web host's cheapest package costs $3.95 per month (for its 2-year plan; $4.95 per month + $30 setup if paid monthly). It offers 60 GB of disk space, unlimited email accounts, 600 GB of traffic, the ability to host up to 10 domains, Perl, PHP, 1 MySQL database, SSL secure server, SSI, FrontPage 2000/2002/2003 extensions, website builder, unlimited POP3 email, email forwarding, autoresponders, spam filtering, custom error pages, etc. (Note that like all web hosts listed here, from time to time they have promotions which offer something different from what is listed above. Check their site for the latest.)
- Homestead
This web host targets beginning webmasters who want to use their online website templates and site builder. They provide some 2,000+ web templates, the ability to customize it, 5 web pages, 25 MB storage space, 5 GB bandwidth, web statistics, etc, for $4.99 per month. There is a 30-day free trial for those who want to check it out. (It seems to come from the same company as Intuit Websites, listed elsewhere on this page and even has the same hosting features, so I guess this particular variation of their offer is just branding.)
- HostMonster: Host Unlimited Domains
This web host provides hosting for an unlimited number of domains and subdomains for $6.95 per month (paid 2-yearly; it's $8.95 + $30 setup if paid 3-monthly). The hosting package includes 600 GB of disk storage, a free domain name if you pay for one of the annual payment plans, a site builder, unlimited POP3 and POP3 secure email accounts, 6,000 GB of data transfer (bandwidth), unlimited email forwarding addresses and autoresponders, unlimited FTP accounts, 100 MySQL databases, 100 PostgreSQL databases, IMAP and IMAP secure email support, SSI, Perl, PHP 5, Python, Ruby on Rails, custom PHP.INI files, SSH, anonymous FTP, FrontPage 2000/2002 extensions, .htaccess overrides, password protected directories, a variety of shopping carts, and so on.
- Dotster
This company, also known for its domain names, offers 5 free domains for any of their hosting packages. Their cheapest package, at $5.75 per month (annual payments are cheaper), includes 10 GB of web storage, 300 GB of data transfer, subdomain hosting, 10 MySQL or MSSQL databases, 100 email accounts (250 MB mailbox disk space), Web email, email forwarding, 5 FTP logins (for their Linux package only), spam filters, Web Analytics, a site builder, etc. In addition, a variety of preinstalled scripts such as blogging scripts, photo galleries, guestbooks, WordPress, etc, are available. Both credit card and PayPal payments are accepted here.
- pair Networks
This is a reputable and large web host that offers a wide range of plans for webmasters. You should at minimum use the Advanced plan at $17.95 per month since the cheaper plans don't allow you to install your own scripts. This plan comes with 80 GB per month transfer, 1500 MB disk space, 10 MySQL databases, PHP, Perl, Python, C, C++, Tcl, cron jobs (up to once per hour), 800 email mailboxes, unlimited email forwarding, aliases and auto-responders, junk email filters and virus scanning for your email, web based email, 10 additional FTP logins (in addition to the default FTP), SSH, SFTP (secure FTP), the ability to host additional domains ($5 setup; and $1/month additional if you want dedicated IP addresses) on the same account, etc.
- Intuit Websites
This web host has an online site builder that lets you customize from 2,000 designs for your site. The designs come complete with graphics, navigation, different pages, etc. You get 30 days free (as a trial period), after which, the package costs $4.99 per month (although I'm not sure what the billing term is). (If the name is familiar to you, it's because the company is the maker of the well-known QuickBooks accounting software.)
- Bluehost Business Hosting
For $6.95 a month (paid 2-yearly, $7.95 if paid annually), you get 600 GB of web space, 6,000 GB of data transfer, a free domain name, 2,500 POP/IMAP email accounts, unlimited email forwarding and autoresponders, web mail, spam filtering (via SpamAssassin), SSL, 1,000 FTP accounts, anonymous FTP, SSH, CGI, PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby / Ruby on Rails, 50 MySQL databases, 50 PostgreSQL databases, SSI, web statistics and web logs, 2000/2002/2003 FrontPage extensions, the ability to host an unlimited number of domain names and subdomain names on your account, various preinstalled scripts (eg, a forum, form mail, PHP Nuke, chat, bloggers, mailing lists), shopping carts (Agora, OS Commerce Shopping Cart, Cube Cart, Zen Cart), .htaccess overrides, etc.

For $4.95 per month for the first term and $7.95 thereafter (paid annually, I think), this web hosting service provides unlimited storage space, unlimited bandwidth, a free domain name (on annual payment schemes), the ability to host unlimited domains, 2,500 POP3 email accounts, forwarding e-mail accounts, autoresponders, spam-filtering, a website builder, PHP, Perl, 25 MySQL databases, server side includes (SSI), a control panel, various free scripts (shopping cart, forum and blog scripts), FTP, web statistics, web access logs and error logs, FrontPage 2000/2002 extensions, error pages, etc.
- Easy CGI Web Hosting
For $7.96 per month (paid annually), you get 350 GB of disk space, 3,500 GB of monthly data transfer, the ability to host an unlimited number of domains, an unlimited number of FTP accounts, ASP.NET, ASP, PHP, Perl, SSI, FrontPage 2002 server extensions, 50 MySQL databases, an unlimited number of Microsoft Access databases, web statistics, etc, on a Windows server running IIS.
