Free Video Capture and Recording Software

The software listed on this page allow you to record video from your capture card, video cameras (videocams), webcam, or other video capture devices. The video can then be saved on your computer as a video file. Some of the software here can automatically operate your camcorder, record for specified durations, broadcast (video cast) your video to webcam chat programs, burn your recording directly to DVD, etc. Most, if not all, of these software will be able to use the free video codecs installed on your system to create good quality compressed video files.

Free Video Recording and Capture Tools

VirtualVCR (Windows)

This program allows you to capture from devices like TV Tuners and capture cards that have WDM drivers. It saves your videos in the AVI format, supports an arbitrary resolution setting, allows you to set up audio and video compression codecs and use installed DirectShow filters, you can crop the video before capturing, schedule a capture at preset times, etc. This is a Windows program.

CaptureFlux (Windows)

CaptureFlux can capture from devices connected through a firewire (including DV camcorders) or USB link (such as a USB webcam) as well as video acquisition cards. You can also capture audio only or video only if you wish. Supported file formats include the native format of the device, DivX if you have it installed, WMV, AVI, WAV, etc. The software is a Windows program and is for personal use only.

Virtualdub - Video Capture and Editing (Windows)

Virtualdub is a well-known video capture, processing and editing software that allows you to capture video from an input source and perform simple video editing. It features fractional frame rates (eg a frame rate of 29.97 is possible), the ability to create AVI2 (OpenDML) files to break the AVI 2 GB file size limit (as well as the FAT32 4 GB file size limit), integrated volume meter and histogram (input level monitoring), real-time downsizing, noise reduction and field swapping, lots of keyboard and mouse shortcuts, optimized disk access, etc. It also has a basic video editor useful for simple cut and trim operations. This is a Windows program.

Broadcaster StudioPRO (Windows)

Broadcaster lets you capture video from any video playing on your computer screen, including live streaming video, pre-recorded video clips playing in a media player, etc. Basically, if it can be played on your computer, Broadcaster claims to be able to capture/record it. You can save the video to a variety of file formats and compression. The software also allows you to broadcast your video files or live streams through your web camera outputs, split the webcam outputs into multiple outputs, and broadcast simultaneously on multiple camera chat sites including Yahoo Messenger, MSN messenger and Skype.

Video Caster (Windows)

Video Caster can capture footage from your video camera (be it a Digital Video camcorder or a simple webcam, connected on either your Firewire or USB ports), create video slideshows from your photos, convert video and audio files (MPEG, AVI, MP3, WMV) to streaming media format and publish them to any web host. You have the ability to select an animation style for your slideshow (if you're making one), apply music to it, and add video effects like Black-and-White, X-Ray, Mirror and Invert.

Video DVD Maker (Windows)

While Video DVD Maker Free is primarily a DVD authoring tool, it also has the ability to capture and record video directly from TV tuners, webcams, DV cameras, or from video files. Video formats supported include AVI, DivX, XVid, MP4, MPG, WMV, ASF, MOV, etc. You can burn the DVD you created to CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD DL, etc. It can create DVD video, Video CD (VCD), and Super Video CD (SVCD). This is a Windows program.

Exsate DV Capture Live (Windows)

Exsate DV Capture Live allows you to capture DV video from Firewire (IEEE-1394) camcorders. It can automatically operate your camcorder by rewinding it, capture any timecode interval, etc. The software is able to recompress, in realtime, your recording using any DirectShow codec like DivX. to the AVI or WMV video formats. It has scene detection and is able to write them to a single file or a different scene to a separate file.
