Free Online Photo-Sharing Web Hosts

Reviews of free photo sharing and online photo album services

Free Online Photo-Sharing Services / Web Hosts

This page lists free services that will host your photos and other pictures online. They are convenient if you want to have an online photo album or to showcase your photos on the web. Since these are essentially free web hosts, they are usually also ad-supported, meaning that they will display advertisements on the page where your photos are displayed. Some of these hosts also allow you to link to those photographs from your blog. Some of the photo-sharing sites also allow you to create a public area, where the photos you post are accessible by everyone on the Internet, as well as a private section, where only users you grant access (such as family and friends) can view them.

Note that if you are a professional photographer who wishes to showcase your work, you may prefer to create your own website on a commercial web host. You can then set up your own photo galleries on your website. This gives you better flexibility and makes your site look more professional.

If you need to touch-up your photo, crop it, or otherwise edit it, you should check the Free Image and Photo Editing Programs page. The software tools listed on that page are often more fully-featured than the limited online web-based versions provided by some of the free photo hosting services below. There are also other free online photo editors around.

Google Photos

You get unlimited storage for photos and videos, although your photos are limited to a maximum of 16 MP (megapixels) and the videos to 1080p resolution.

This free photo sharing service allows you to share photos, graphics and video. Supported file types for images include gif, jpg, jpeg, png and bmp. Supported video types include g2, 3gp, 3gp2, 3gpp, 3p, asf, avi, divx, dv, dvx, flv, gif, moov, mov, mp4, mpeg4, mpg4, mpe, mpeg, mpg, qt, wmv, xvid, and rm. Images are limited to a maximum of 1 MB each or 1024x768 pixels in resolution each. Videos are limited to 5 minutes or less in play length and 100 MB in file size. (Note, if you are primarily uploading videos, you may get better features if you use a free video sharing and hosting service.) The image/video host allows you to link to your photos from your blog or other pages. You can also create slideshows (with up to 30 images), video mashups, collages, strips and stamps. Other features include the ability to create, customize and share 3D avatars (which you can use in forums, etc) You can make your photo albums public or private, as well remix or edit your video from their web-based interface. The service provides 2 GB of space for your images and video clips, and up to 10 GB of monthly traffic. There are probably also other limitations; this list is not exhaustive. Note that if you do not log into your account from time to time (at least once every 90 days at the time I checked), it may get deleted. In addition, you are not allowed to hotlink to the resources you place here (for example, you cannot upload an image here and expect it to be visible in a forum elsewhere). Like most free hosting services, they are ad-supported.

You are given 1000 GB of storage, with no limits on uploads or the number of images visible. It supports JPEG, PNG and non-animated GIF; all other photo formats are converted to JPEG. Your images can be as large as 200 MB, and can be no more than 31.25 times wider than they are tall. You are also allowed to upload videos, which are limited to a maximum of 1 GB and a playback of the first 3 minutes. (You will probably need to use a video sharing service if you want to share videos, rather than a image/photo sharing one.)

Picasa Web Albums

[Update: this service has been discontinued.] You can either use the free Google Picasa program (see the Free Image and Photo Editing Software page) to publish your photos to this service or do it directly from your web browser. You get 1 GB of space for your photos. Each photo can be no larger than 20 MB or 50 megapixels wide. If you use the Picasa program, you are also allowed to upload videos in one of the following formats: .avi, .asf, .mov (QuickTime), Windows Media, .mpg, .avi, .asf, .mov, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, and .mp4. The video must have a frame rate of more than 12 frames per second, bitrate of more than 260 Kbps, file size no larger than 100 MB and contain recognisable video content. Video codecs supported include H.264, H.263, MPEG 1/2/4 and motion JPEG. (Note that if you want to upload videos, the free video hosts are probably more relevant to you.)
